Overview

Diving with the Coquitlam Sharks offers children and youth the opportunity to learn springboard diving in a safe, supportive, and skill‑focused environment. Our program welcomes participants aged 7 and up who are comfortable in deep water, can swim 25 m unassisted, and are ready to take instruction. Divers can participate recreationally or progress toward competitive opportunities.

Why Choose Diving?

  • Builds strength, flexibility, coordination, and spatial awareness
  • Develops focus, confidence, and safe risk‑taking
  • Offers individualprogress within a team environment.
  • Provides a non‑contact competitive sport option

Dive Practice

Practice consists of dryland training and practice on the one-meter and three-meter springboard. Dryland training may make up more than half of the practice and focuses on strength, coordination, and safe skill development. Running shoes and appropriate athletic clothing are required for all practices.

Summer Program

In the summer, divers are split into one of three groups and may attend as many practices in their group as their schedules allow. While general group descriptions are outlined below, progression and training are not limited by initial group placement. Group composition takes siblings, social groupings, and multi-sport participation into consideration.

Junior Group-Focus: water confidence, basics, safe take‑offs, listening skills
-Largest coach-to-diver ratio, with some support from older athletes in the Intermediate and Senior groups
-Extra opportunities to prioritize fun, confidence-building, and team development
-Invited to compete in BCSSA competitions; participation will be encouraged but optional
-Some divers may participate in BC Diving-sanctioned meets as appropriate
Intermediate Group-Builds on Junior Group expectations, with increased focus on competition
-Further development of dive lists to support more competitive scoring
-Higher expectations for following direction and applying corrections
-Invited to compete in BCSSA competitions; participation remains encouraged but optional
-Some divers may participate in BC Diving-sanctioned meets as appropriate
Senior Group-Builds on Intermediate Group expectations, with increased emphasis on progressing toward higher degrees of difficulty
-Smallest coach-to-diver ratio
-Designed for divers demonstrating readiness for increasingly self-directed practice and training discipline
-Participate in BCSSA competitions
-Some divers may participate in BC Diving-sanctioned meets as appropriate
